We pray for wisdom about situations in our lives. If we ask God for wisdom, he is pleased to give the wisdom we need (James 1:5). The apostle Paul said, "Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside" (Colossians 4:5). He went on to say, "Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one" (Colossians 4:6).
Salt is the illustration of speech with grace. It is true that salt seasons and preserves food. In Bible days there was no refrigeration such as we have today. Salt was used to preserve the quality of food they ate. So, a believer's words should "always be with grace, seasoned with salt."
Someone has said, "Talk is cheap." That's certainly not true in the Christian life. Believers speak to God in prayer. God hears and responds to our prayers. Christians speak to others about Christ. Speech with grace shares the gospel of Christ with those who are not saved. Speech with grace is for their good and God's glory.
We pray for those who don't know Christ as their Lord and Savior. We pray for open doors to share the gospel of Christ. The apostle Paul requested prayer for opportunities to speak to others about Christ. His request was "praying for us that God would open a door for the word to speak the mystery of Christ" (Colossians 4:3).
