How Do We Repent?

Charles Spurgeon explained, "To repent is to change your mind about sin and Christ and all the great things of God." He went on to say, "The person who truly repents is never satisfied with his or her repentance. We can no more repent perfectly than we can live perfectly."

God's command for all people everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30). We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Only the Lord Jesus Christ can save you from the curse and condemnation of sin. The Christian life begins when we repent, turning from the sin of unbelief to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 16:31).

Christians are not perfect people in this life. We are still tempted and sin from time to time. When we truly repent, we confess our sin to God. Then, we find fresh cleansing from sin, through the blood of Jesus Christ. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

Spurgeon said, "To repent is to change your mind." As we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ through Bible study, we understand by receiving more truth from the word of God. That is one reason Spurgeon taught that "we can no more repent perfectly than we can live perfectly."
