God's Grace Is Love

J. I. Packer said, "In the New Testament grace means God's love in action towards men who merited the opposite of love. Grace means God moving heaven and earth to save sinners who could not lift a finger to save themselves."

Dr. Packer well understood the grace of God. Grace is the only way God saves sinners. It is grace plus nothing. He knew that God saves "sinners who could not lift a finger to save themselves." God's love saves sinners at the cross of Jesus (John 3:16; Romans 5:8). That's God's love in action to save sinners by grace alone (Romans 11:6).

Grace brings all the glory to God for the salvation of sinners. Yes, to God alone be the glory! What is impossible with sinners is made sure by God's grace alone. Or, as Packer put it, "grace means God moving heaven and earth to save sinners." That's God's love in action.

Dr. Packer stated, "In the New Testament grace means God's love in action towards men who merited the opposite of love." That is God's love for sinners. There is no merit with us to deserve God's love in Christ. God's love for sinners is grace freely given at the cross of Jesus. As sinners, we merit nothing but judgment and condemnation. In Christ, believers find God's love for sinners "who merited the opposite of love."
